Start from zero with a patient, encouraging teacher. You’ll cover proper embouchure, posture, breathing technique, and your first melodies. Children and adults alike are welcome, it’s never too late to start.

ABRSM & Trinity prep

Grade 1 – Diploma

Structured lessons for students working towards ABRSM or Trinity flute examinations from Grade 1 through Grade 8 and diploma. Our teachers know the syllabi thoroughly and have a strong track record of distinctions.

Advanced & pre-conservatory

Performance focus

For students aiming at conservatory entry, competition preparation, or simply building a high level of artistry. Repertoire-focused with attention to technique, expression, and musical maturity.

Lessons on your schedule

One-to-one, once a week, at a time that suits you. We recommend lessons at your teacher’s studio, a quiet, conducive space made for teaching, where it’s easy to focus and get the most from every session. Our teachers are based across Singapore, so you’ll be matched with someone conveniently located for you.

Lesson length: Beginners typically start with 45-minute lessons. We generally recommend 60 minutes, it gives enough time to warm up, work on technique, and cover repertoire properly. Beginner students who also want to include music theory can move to 60 minutes from the start. From around Grade 5 onwards, 60-minute lessons become standard. We’ll advise the right format when we get in touch.

What’s the best age to start flute lessons?

Most children are physically ready for the flute from around age 7 or 8, when they have the lung capacity, finger reach, and arm length to hold the instrument comfortably. Younger children sometimes start on a curved-head flute, which is lighter and easier to manage. There’s no upper age limit, many of our adult learners begin in their 30s, 40s, or later, and progress remarkably quickly.

Are trial lessons available?

Yes. If you would rather try before committing to a regular weekly slot, let us know in the enquiry form and we will arrange one with the teacher we match you to. A trial runs like an ordinary lesson: your teacher will hear where you are, talk through what you want from lessons, and show you how they work. There is no obligation to continue afterwards.

Do I need to buy a flute before my first lesson?

Ideally yes, so you can practise between lessons. If you’re not sure what to buy, hold off, your teacher will advise on a suitable beginner model and where to source it. Renting is also an option for very young or undecided learners. We don’t sell instruments ourselves, so the recommendation is independent.

How much do private flute lessons cost in Singapore?

Rates depend on the teacher’s experience, lesson duration, and whether sessions are at the teacher’s studio or your home. Lessons typically run 45 or 60 minutes. We’ll share full details when we follow up on your enquiry.

ABRSM or Trinity, which flute exam should we choose?

Both ABRSM and Trinity are internationally recognised and accepted by Singapore secondary schools and JCs for music CCA points. ABRSM is more widely used in Singapore and has a stronger scales and aural component; Trinity gives candidates more flexibility in repertoire and technical work. The choice often comes down to which syllabus suits the student’s strengths.

How often should my child practise between lessons?

Short, regular practice beats long occasional sessions. For beginners, 15–20 minutes most days is more effective than two long sessions a week. Older or exam-track students typically practise 30–45 minutes daily. The most important factor is consistency, even 10 focused minutes a day builds far more progress than people expect.

Where do lessons take place?

Locations vary by teacher and are confirmed after we match you. Many of our teachers work across central Singapore, some teach from home studios, some travel to students, and a few offer online lessons via Zoom for students with scheduling challenges or who live further away.

Can students go on to play with King’s Flute Choir?

King’s Flute Choir is a performing ensemble you audition into when you have attained minimum Grade 8, and you may enquire if you would like to join.
